DPF Solutions

Our DPF solutions offer several advantages including improved fuel efficiency and engine performance

Why Remap a Car's Engine?

Vehicles from the factory often have the engine’s potential performance limited by the Engine Control Unit (ECU). Car remapping is an affordable and effective way of increasing a vehicle’s performance, power output or fuel efficiency by rewriting or overwriting the software which manages the ECU.

Better Performance

ECU tuning can result in up to a 35% improvement in power output and performance

Improve Fuel Efficiency

Car remapping can allow the engine to run at a more efficient point of operation, the result being less fuel consumption

It's Cost Effective

In comparison to other modifications and physical upgrades (e.g. engine swaps), car remapping is much cheaper

FAQs

We’ve answered some of the most popular questions about car remapping and tuning.

If you have any more questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us on 01386 291059 or send an email to info@thevehicledoctor.co.uk

How does the remapping process work?

It’s first important to understand a little bit more about the vehicle’s ECU. Modern vehicles are actually controlled by a lot of ECUs which contain a dedicated microchip with its own software and firmware.

These individual ECUs control different functions for example: power steering, windows, air conditioning, fuel use, air/ fuel ratio, and ignition timing. In high-end vehicles there can be over 100 different ECUs installed to support performance things such as turbo charging and boosting.

When we remap your vehicle we will first carry out a visual inspection which is to check there are no obvious problems with your engine bay which could cause us any issues. We will then connect our diagnostic equipment to the car’s OBD (on-board diagnostics) to ensure there are no error codes recorded by the ECU. We can then begin the remapping process.

This involves downloading the current ECU files and comparing to our database of remap files. At The Vehicle Doctor we have access to the largest and safest remapping database with over 50,000 files available. The relevant files are then used to overwrite the current ECU software.

Once this is complete, we do a diagnostic check to ensure there are no error codes. The vehicle is then road tested.

Do I need a professional to remap my car?

It is absolutely essential that a professional remaps your vehicle. This is not something that can be done by an amateur as it could have severe safety implications for both the driver and passengers, and the car’s engine.

Remapping is a complicated and skilled process which should be left to experts. If you are based in Worcester or the surrounding areas, please contact The Vehicle Doctor by calling 01386 291059 or sending an email to info@thevehicledoctor.co.uk

Is car remapping legal in the UK?

Remapping a vehicle’s ECU is legal in the UK.

However, there are some things you need to consider though before your vehicle is remapped:

  • Make sure you contact your insurer to determine if your policy covers modified cars and if it will affect your insurance premium. You should also check if your insurer has an administration fees for amending your policy.
  • If your car is on lease, PCP, or finance you should contact your provider before remapping the engine. Some finance contracts allow modifications but others may not.
  • If your car is covered by a manufacturer’s or extended warranty, you should read the warranty terms & conditions and contact the relevant dealership to check if your vehicle can be remapped without affecting it. The same applies for if you have taken out gap insurance too.

Are there any downsides of remapping?

Remapping a vehicle will alter the performance, meaning you may need to make some alterations to your driving style. For example, the car may accelerate more quickly, so you need to be conscious of this increased power to ensure this does not become a safety issue or result in police action.

It’s also important to note that some ECU changes may mean that the vehicle needs to use premium fuel which has a higher octane rating than regular petrol. High-octane fuel is slightly more expensive than regular petrol.

How much does it cost to remap a car?

At The Vehicle Doctor we offer Stage 1 Remapping which costs £250.

We also have a Dyno testing machine which can be used to measure power and torque before and after the remap. Our Dyno tests cost £120 when booked separately, or £50 when booking with a Stage 1 Remap, bringing the total cost of the Dyno run and remap to just £300.

We are remapping experts based near Worcester with access to over 50,000 remap files and the latest specialist equipment. To book a remap, please contact The Vehicle Doctor by calling 01386 291059 or sending an email to info@thevehicledoctor.co.uk

Can all cars undergo remapping?

Most modern cars can be remapped (usually if bought after the year 2000) but not all vehicles can undergo the ECU remapping process.

There are also some cases where even if remapping is possible, it is not recommended. Remapping is typically performed on turbocharged engines, as naturally aspirated engines often do not benefit from remapping.

Please get in touch by calling 01386 291059 or emailing info@theevehicledoctor.co.uk to find out if your car can be remapped.

How long does remapping take?

At The Vehicle Doctor we offer remapping while you wait as the process usually only takes 1-2 hours to complete. You are more than welcome to wait at our facility which is located in the Worcester area whilst the remapping process is carried out. The vehicle can then be road tested after the remap has been completed.

Do you have a remap calculator?

The Vehicle Doctor has an extensive remap calculator which covers hundreds of manufacturers including Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Ford, etc. Try our Remap Calculator today to see how much of a difference a remap will make for your vehicle.

How much faster is a remapped car?

Remapped cars can have a 35% increase in brake horse power and torque. Increases to the performance do depend on the vehicle make and model. If you would like some more information about the performance increases for your own vehicle, please use our Remap Calculator

Can remapping be reversed?

Remapping can be reversed if you wish to have the changes removed. This reversal process needs to be performed by a professional in the same way that the original remap process is undertaken as this is a specialist job.

Will a remap affect my insurance?

It is essential that you inform your insurance company if your vehicle is remapped as this is considered a car modification and if you do not inform your insurance provider then your policy could be invalidated. You should always contact your insurance provider prior to booking a remap in order to check if they will still provide cover and if there are any charges to your policy fee.

Will a remap affect my warranty?

Remapping can invalidate a car’s warranty. This is because ECU remapping is a modification which is beyond the manufacturers control. It is essential that you contact your provider if your vehicle is still under warranty to discuss the implications before remapping the vehicle.

Can you remap a leased car?

Some leasing companies allow remapping and others do not. If your car is on lease, PCP, or finance, you should contact your provider before remapping the engine. In the case that your vehicle can be remapped, you will need permission from the provider and may need to reverse the process at the end of your lease.

Will remapping my car damage the engine?

Providing that you use a reputable and experienced company to remap your engine, it should not get damaged. Remapping is a complex process so it is essential that you do not attempt this process yourself and always choose experienced professionals to carry out the remapping such as The Vehicle Doctor.
