What is an ECU?
The Engine Control Unit (ECU) consists of multiple microchips with their own firmware and software which are used to control loads of different functions including:
- Air-fuel ratio
- Transmission shift
- Redline
- Ignition timing
Overall, the ECU affects important things like top speed, acceleration, and fuel efficiency. Cars come from the factory with software which controls these aspects, but it is possible to alter this software via tuning.
What does engine tuning alter?
ECU tuning can be used to make several changes, some of the most common being:
- Rev limiter
- Speed limiter
- Ignition timing
- Air-fuel ratio
- Boost levels
- Valve timing
- Launch control
- Torque management
Are there any downsides of tuning?
Tuning a vehicle’s engine will alter the performance, meaning you may need to make some alterations to your driving style. For example, the car may accelerate more quickly, so you need to be conscious of this increased power to ensure this does not become a safety issue or result in police action.
It’s also important to note that some ECU changes may mean that the vehicle needs to use premium fuel which has a higher octane rating than regular petrol. High-octane fuel is slightly more expensive than regular petrol.
It is also important to note that remapping can invalidate a vehicle’s warranty and insurers must be informed if the engine is remapped. If a car is on lease, PCP or finance, some providers will not allow modifications such as tuning. Therefore it’s vital that you contact your insurance, warranty and finance providers before tuning the engine.
How much can tuning affect performance?
Tuned cars can have a 35% increase in brake horse power and torque. Increases to the performance do depend on the vehicle make and model.
What is gearbox tuning?
Gearbox tuning/ remapping can be used to change shift point, remove torque limiters, and remove gear lock-out, amongst other alterations. The result is improved shift times, increased acceleration and less lag, resulting in a better and smoother overall driving experience.
What is diesel tuning?
Diesel tuning or remapping is the process of altering the ECU software in order to achieve better power and torque. Diesel tuning involves altering various aspects such as:
- Injector timing
- Boost pressure
- Air-fuel ratio
Will having my car's engine tuned affect my insurance?
It is essential that you inform your insurance company if your vehicle is tuned as this is considered a modification. If you do not inform your insurance provider, then your policy could be invalidated. You should always contact your insurance provider prior to booking a tuning service in order to check if they will still provide cover and if there are any charges involved.
Do I need a professional to tune my car's engine?
It is vital that only a professional performs any engine tuning service. DIY attempts at tuning are dangerous and can risk damage to both the vehicle, and the driver/ passengers. ECU tuning is a complicated and technical process which should always be left to the experts.
